The writer Nikos Kazantzakis lived here and collected his characters for his Sorbas novella, the basis of the later world-famous Hollywood film adaptation with Anthony Quinn about the local miner and bon vivant, the charismatic Greek, who is still considered a synonym for the irrepressible lust for life of the Hellenes. The bus (approx. 250m) commutes several times a day between Stoupa, Agios Nikolaos and Kalamata. Kalamata Airport is 55 km away.
